Mashinsky Rejects 20-Year Sentence Proposal in Celsius Collapse Case
Alex Mashinsky, founder of defunct crypto lender Celsius, has vehemently opposed the U.S. Department of Justice’s recommendation for a 20-year prison sentence. Prosecutors allege Mashinsky deceived users and manipulated the platform’s native token for personal gain—a claim his legal team calls disproportionate for a first-time, nonviolent offender.
The defense filed a counterproposal suggesting no more than 366 days incarceration, emphasizing Mashinsky’s clean record prior to Celsius’ 2022 collapse. A 20-year term would see the former CEO incarcerated until nearly age 80, marking one of the harshest potential sentences in crypto industry legal history.
